Interview with Victoria Cappucci, FCRH ’16
Can you tell me a bit about Fashion for Philanthropy?
FFP is a student-run philanthropic campus club that essentially acts as a fashion outlet for students. We hold various fundraisers throughout the academic year, with all proceeds going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. There are bake sales and other events, like “make your own chai latte.” The primary event is the spring fashion show that takes place in April every year, where we raise the most money.
How did you first hear about FFP?
Back when I was going through the college decision process, my older brother was a graduating senior at Fordham. I was very interested in fashion and potentially making a career out of it, so he told me about this big club with an annual fashion show featuring student designers and models. Since I was undecided about what school to attend, he brought me to the show and I was very impressed by it. I definitely feel this played a part in my decision to pick Fordham.
How would you describe your experience with the organization?
When I started my freshman year, I made it a point to join FFP and try to get involved with the club. Last year I served on the E-Board as PR Coordinator, and now as a senior I hold the position of Vice President. I really see this organization as a great group of girls and guys coming together and making something out of their passion. The fashion show in particular really brings us together. It is a huge collaborative process, with everyone working to reach out to potential donors.
What is the process of raising money through the annual fashion show?
Last year we raised about $4,000 from the fashion show, all going towards Make-A-Wish. Students purchase tickets for admission, and there is an option to buy VIP tickets at an extra cost. This gets you a better seat and a complimentary gift bag filled with goodies. People also make additional monetary donations at the door. Another way we raise money is through the raffles that take place at the show. The prizes are comprised of entirely donated items, so that really helps.
What kinds of donations do you receive for the show?
Many are designer brands, including Jeffrey Campbell shoes and Rebecca Minkoff bags. We also receive donations from Bloomingdale’s and various makeup lines. Local venders are always willing to help, and we even received donations from big vendors like Vineyard Vines and LF Stores. Some clothing and other items are donated for the models to wear in the show, while others are used for the raffle.
Does FFP team up with any other student groups?
Yes, every year we collaborate with other on-campus clubs for the show. Students from Fordham’s FLASH Magazine do the makeup, hair, and photography, which is really helpful where we lack resources. We have a student DJ as well, so there is a lot of opportunity to showcase student talent. I really love how the fashion show both raises money for a great cause, and also brings together students from various areas of the Fordham community.
This year’s show will take place on April 8th, and model auditions start this week.
